Pre-2009 / Pre-Bondi Sands – Working in the Lifestyle, Wellbeing & Fitness industry, Shaun was a regular at Blair’s tanning salon and their friendship begins.
2008 – The Victorian Government led the way in solarium regulation, banning use by under-18s and people with very fair skin. The tanning salon industry was hard hit by these regulations.
2009 – Shaun and Blair work together to come up with a high quality natural self tanning product that looks just like the real Australian tan.
2012 – Bondi Sands launches its first three products in Australia in Priceline.
2013 – Bondi Sands launched into New Zealand in Greencross, Farmers and Countdown.
2015 – Sales have grown and Bondi Sands is the top selling tanning line in Australia.
2015 – Bondi Sands launches in the UK in Boots and Superdrug and is on sale in over 1400 stores.
2017 – Bondi Sands released its new suncare range – Suncare the Bondi Sands Way – across Australia and New Zealand with a goal of becoming the number one selling suncare brand in the world.
A global patent on the brand’s Tan Eraser was taken out. Over 800,000 units are sold within its first year on the market.
2018 – Bondi Sands is sold in 10 countries in more than 10,000 outlets.
The brand’s European Expansion Strategy begins. Bondi Sands launched into Ireland and Netherlands.
Bondi Sand’s also releases a Cosmetics Range (GLO) in Australia.
2018 – Product R&D and innovation continues. New products continue to be released (12) and world-first products are developed and sold (5).
- The Dark and Express Foam products dominate the market across several countries. A global milestone is reached with one bottle of the brand’s dark foam product being sold every 20 seconds.
- Unprecedented sales occur when the brand’s 1 Hour Express Tanning Foam is launched across Australia, New Zealand and the UK. More than 100,000 units were sold in the first four weeks – making it the top selling self-tan product in these markets.
2018 – Bondi Sands becomes one of the largest beauty brand exporters of Australian owned and manufactured products. Close to 10 million units of self-tan, sun care and cosmetic products are sold within the financial year.
2019 – Bondi Sands launch into the USA via 7,700 Walgreens stores. It’s the largest launch of an Australian beauty brand into the United States, and Walgreens appoints Bondi Sands Category Captain.
Bondi Sands also launch into Norway and Germany.
2020 – Bondi Sands donate over $100,000 and launch the Reuse to Rebuild campaign in the wake of the Australian Bushfire disaster, creating special reusable Frank Green ceramic cups and bottles to assist those affected by the bushfires, with 100% of proceeds donated to the Red Cross to support community recovery across Australia.
2020 – Bondi Sands had a phenomenal launch in to Canada quickly becoming the #2 Sunless Brand at Shoppers Drug Mart. Select tanning products exclusively available online & instore at SDM.
2021 – The Bondi Sands flagship store officially launched on Tmall to facilitate cross-border trade into China, offering a select range of Self Tan and Suncare SKUs to Chinese consumers. Since, Bondi Sands has launched across various Chinese e-commerce platforms including Little Red Book, TaoBao and TikTok’s in-app shopping feature.
2021 – Bondi Sands ramps up actions and initiatives to put sustainability at the forefront of the brand. Promising to the global community and pledge as a brand is to have fully recyclable packaging across all of our products by 2025.
Bondi Sands launches its first ever sustainable self tanning range, Pure. Packaged in ethically sourced, 100% recyclable packaging to limit the impact on the environment.
Partnership with Take 3 for the Sea. Bondi Sands donates $25,000 to Take 3 for the Sea as part of World Earth Month highlighting the brands sustainability efforts.
The People – The team behind the tan is truly what makes the brand special. Eight years into a worldwide adventure, Bondi Sands is now a global market-leader stocked in over 22,000 stores worldwide, with a multi-national team of over 75 people based across LA, London and the Melbourne HQ.
